Ecuador Vice President Takes Power
QUITO, Ecuador (AP) - Vice President Gustavo Noboa assumed the presidency
today with the military's backing after a tumultuous Indian revolt backed by
the armed forces toppled President Jamil Mahuad. Noboa became Ecuador's sixth
president in four years with the signing of a decree at the Defense Ministry.
The military chief, Gen. Carlos Mendoza, dissolved the junta early this
morning. Mendoza said the quick decision to elevate Noboa to the presidency
was made after discussions with U.S. officials, who warned that Ecuador could
lose its foreign aid and investment it did not restore power to the elected
government.
