Subject: USM: VIRUS UPDATE 05/05/2000

------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are now able to remove the iloveyou virus from infected computers. If
your computer has been infected by this virus, please call 266-HELP and
we will arrange for a technician to visit you and remove the virus and
repair the system.

Regrettably, we are unable to retrieve data that may have been deleted by
this virus, and we do not guarantee that there will be no residual
system problems on your machine in the wake of this infection.

One of our major concerns is that this virus could spread due to .jpg (a
picture file commonly used on most internet sites to display graphics) or
other infected files being passed around. We are very concerned that our
key servers (machines that provide essential services to campus)
could be infected. For that reason, FTP and file sharing services have
been suspended until further notice to increase our network security.
This suspension of services has meant some individuals on campus cannot
update their web sites. We apologize for this inconvenience, but feel it
is necessary to protect our campus servers from infection. The suspension
is temporary while we do research to determine ALL implications of the
virus. We will keep the campus informed of our findings.

Yesterday afternoon we purged Ocean of any instances of the virus
waiting to be downloaded through email. Ocean is now using software
which automatically scans all incoming email, identifies viruses and
rejects email messages containing them. A notification message is sent
via email to you if such a message is intercepted being sent to your
email address. Here is an example message:

We would ask you to be most aware of new variants of this virus that
have been discovered. Currently we are aware of the following:

1) A message entitled "Fw: Joke" or "Fwd: Joke" with an attachment of
"very funny.vbs".

2) A message entitled "Mothers Day Order Confirmation" with text
advising that you have purchased a diamond special and an attachment
called "mothersday.vbs" which claims to be an invoice for the order.
This virus will delete all files with ".ini" and ".bat" extensions
(These files are normally used to start programs on the PC).

3) A message entitled "Susitikim shi vakara kavos puodukui..." that
contains the "A-LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs" attachment.

As stated in a previous email we STRONGLY advise caution in opening any
attachment at this time.

Thank you, -The Office of Technology Resources
