==========================
Al and GW both want to sit in the President's chair. Al is radioactive,
GW
is not. Instead of an election, they are going to play musical chairs in
the oval office (which has had all windows removed). After the music
stops,
one sits down. The chair is scanned by the Republicans to test for GW.
If
the chair is NOT radioactive, then GW sat first and BLOCKED the
radioactive
Al from sitting down. Thus no radioactivity indicates the presence of GW.
If the chair show radioactivity, that indicates the chair is negative for
GW. This is an example of a competitive inhibition assay for GW.
The Democrats, however, want to know if Al is in the chair. In this
scenario, both Al and GW are unlabeled. The music starts; the music
stops.
One sits down in the chair. The Democrats then put a radioactive Tipper
in
the oval office and scan the chair for radioactivity. She would, of
course,
go to the chair only if Al was there, to embrace and congratulate him.
Thus
the presence of radioactivity at the chair indicates that the chair is
positive for Al. This is an example of a direct radioactive assay for
Al.
(Sorry. First day back from a few days off and my mind isn't right yet.)
Tom
