>RE: Visit of the most popular Folkloric Group from Colombia
>
>Gustavus Adolphus College is inviting Jorge Velosa and his music group "Los
>Carrangueros" during November 2, 3 and 4. Although Gustavus will pay for
>their tickets and the time they are going to be at the College, the group
>expressed their will to present their work to a broader audience. For this
>reason we are asking other Colleges and Universities to sponsor concerts or
>workshops with the group after November 5th. The price for concert or
>workshop could be between 250 to 500 dollars, according to "su buena
>voluntad" (whatever you think is fair), as they usually say.
>
>Some important data about Jorge Velosa and Los Carrangueros.
>
>Jorge Velosa (1949) was born in Rquira, State of Boyac, Republic of
>Colombia. He is one of the most important popular poets, musicians and
>folklore specialists in Colombia. He thinks of himself as a contemporary
>"juglar" (minstrel). He has done thorough research in Latin American
>folklore. He has received some of the most prestigious awards given in
>Colombian cultural events such as the "IV Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro
>de Bogot, "Orden de la libertad" from the state of Boyac, and "Festival
>Mono Nuez". A theater in the city of Tunja has been named after him. With
>his folk music ensamble "Los Carrangueros" he has traveled around the
>world. In 1987 they played at The Madison Square Garden in New York.
>
>In July 1999 he was kidnapped and because of the incredible amount of
>people who claimed for his liberation he was released after one month of
>captivity.
>
>I think this is a wonderful opportunity for students to be in contact not
>only with the difficult reality of Colombia but also with a great figure
>and cultural producer who is trying to maintain his culture alive under
>catastrophic circumstances. They will certainly learn a great deal about
>cultural traditions in Latin America as a whole.
