BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - Gunmen killed an outspoken college professor as
his wife and teenage daughter watched, police in Colombia said Saturday.
Alfredo Castro, killed while walking with his family Thursday night in
the Caribbean coastal city of Barranquilla, is the latest victim in a
wave of violence plaguing campuses in the strife-torn South American
country. At least seven professors have been assassinated in just over a
year, while others have fled death threats into exile. A critic of
corruption at the University of Atlantico, Castro, 46, was the second
professor from the Barranquilla-based school assassinated in the past
two months. Police said they did not know why Castro, shot by at least
two gunmen, had been killed. There had been no arrests or claims of
responsibility.
