Dear International Students:

Advisory on Nonimmigrants Traveling Domestically Within the United States

International Student Affairs has received information regarding reports
of nonimmigrants boarding domestic flights within the United States
being questioned and asked for documentation. In at least two of the
incidents, the Immigration Officer doing the questioning told the
individual that he is required to carry his passport, I-94 card or I-797
Approval Notice, IAP-66 for those on J visa or I-20 for those on F visa
with him at all times.

Pursuant to federal code Section 264(e) of the U.S. Immigration and
Nationality Act (INA) all individuals over the age of 18 are required to
carry their registration documentation with them at all times. The
request to see your immigration documents is not a violation of federal
law. However, due to the nature of the atmosphere in the United States,
governmental officials are more prone to ask questions and request
appropriate identification documents.

Based on this information, ISA is advising all international students
and scholars at Southern Miss of the possibility of such incidents at
airports even if the flight does not leave the United States. We are
further advising that internationals contact an ISA staff member prior
to any travel even if you will not be leaving the United States. An ISA
staff member will review your documents and ensure that they are valid,
up-to-date, and that they will accurately reflect your current
immigration status in the United States.

Please feel free to share this information with others interested
individuals. If you need any additional information, please do not
hesitate to contact our office.

USM Counseling Students invite you to an:

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT DISCUSSION GROUP

Come share your concerns and feelings about the recent terrorist attacks

with other international students, Wednesday, October 10, 2001 from 6-7
p.m. in Owings-McQuagge Hall (across from the main library) in Room 202.

For more information call 266-4601. Come and talk or come and listen.

Barbara Whitt Jackson, Director
Intl Student Affairs
