Dice Leroy Sievers, Executive Producer, Nightline Offices, Washington, D.C.
"It's always nice to go into the weekend with a pretty good idea of what we
are going to do on Monday. We can always react to news developments, but
just in case everything is quiet, we try to have a plan. Today was
supposed to be pretty straightforward. Ken Lay was going to testify for
the first time. Meanwhile, the flood of new information, reports,
investigations, memos, just keeps coming out. But yesterday Mr. Lay
changed his mind. His lawyer said the reason was that several congressmen
made remarks on the Sunday morning talk shows that Mr. Lay found
troubling. Needless to say, a lot of people here in Washington were not
surprised.
At the same time, some of those same congressmen now conducting these
hearings have some explaining to do as well. It's already well known how
many took campaign contributions from Enron. And many people have been
asking what Enron got for its money. Well some of these same congressmen
helped pass laws a few years ago protecting corporate executives from
being held responsible for some of their actions, and making it more
difficult for investors to take them to court.
Now I'm all for people seeing the light, even if it's a little tardy. I
would
rather have someone say that they were wrong, and now realize that,
rather than steadfastly hold on to a position in order to be consistent.
At the same time, I think that it's important for us to point out what has
happened, or what has been done for whom, in the past."
