Monday October 16 4:00 - 4:50 PM Kelley 1001   Ted Brekken Assistant Professor School of EECS Oregon State University   The Promise of Wave Power   A significant untapped renewable energy source exists in the world’s oceans: it is estimated that if 0.2% of the oceans’ untapped energy could be harnessed, it could provide power sufficient for the entire world. This presentation discusses the opportunities for ocean wave power to become a new, reliable and clean source of affordable renewable energy. Wave energy research and developments at Oregon State University (OSU) will be presented, in addition to the developing opportunities for the State of Oregon to become a leader in wave power.   Biography:   Ted K.A. Brekken is an Assistant Professor in Energy Systems at Oregon State University. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1999, 2002, and 2005 respectively. He studied electric vehicle motor design at Postech in Pohang, South Korea in 1999. He also studied wind turbine control at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, Norway in 2004-2005 on a Fulbright scholarship. His research interests include control, power electronics and electric drives; specifically digital control techniques applied to renewable energy systems.
