Michael Krau Product Marketing Engineer Intel Pre-boot Applications: A special and significant environment The purpose of this seminar is to approach the Pre-OS boot environment and applications operating in Pre-boot space as specialized code, with a rich history, current utility, and future requirement within all classes of computing systems. The Pre-boot environment is often considered a component of the hardware by software engineering and a component of the software by the hardware community. In reality, it is the final bridge between the static real world hardware environment and the dynamic and virtual world of the operating system and applications. Applications that execute in this space are often powerful, specialized programs, with unique capabilities that can only be supported by the fundamental nature of the pre-boot time frame. The following topics will be discussed: * The History of the Pre-boot environment (including early ROM based "OS environments", and embedded systems) * The evolution of pre-boot and OS environments demonstrating the divergence of the Pre-boot architecture as its own study (including UEFI as a new technology in pre-OS boot): * The system considerations for Pre-OS application development and the ramifications of those considerations. * The future directions of Pre-boot in the PC and embedded industries (in conjunction with new technologies and UEFI) Biography: Michael has over 25 years of embedded software, BIOS, and driver development experience. His education includes a Bachelors and Masters of Science in Computer Science. Michael has been the Chair of the I2O LAN Working group, adjunct faculty at the University of Virginia, a contributor to the EISA Specification, and inventor/co-inventor on 13 patents, Software/Firmware engineer for companies Like Novell, HP, Zenith data Systems, and The US Federal Government. His current efforts include: Current Chair of the Industry Communications Working Group of the UEFI and the Marketing Administrator of the EFI and Framework Open Source Community Website (at www.tianocore.org) as well as a Product Marketing Engineer with Intel SSG, where he is a champion for UEFI.
