Yann Riche

Leveraging people's intimate knowledge in feedback systems
In this talk, I will describe two projects where I attempt to leverage people's
intimacy with their own lives, and their ability to build upon various
heterogeneous sources of information to assess situations and make decisions.
The first case refers to the design and evaluation of markerClock, an
augmented, communicating clock designed to support older adults aging in place.
The second case refers to the design of always-on eco-feedback for the home. I
describe how in these cases, leveraging people's intimacy with the information
allows a system to provide more subtle and meaningful information
visualizations, providing a novel approach for addressing issues such as
privacy, aesthetics and information ambiguity.
Biography

Yann Riche recently obtained his Ph.D. in Human Computer Interactions at the
Université Paris Sud, in the insitu lab at INRIA. His research interests lie in
the technology can support social behaviors, communities, and sustainable
behaviors. His work takes place at the intersection of Computer Supported
Collaborative Work and Computer Mediated Communication. His Ph.D. thesis
explored the design and evaluation of communication devices for supporting
aging in place. To conduct this work, he relied on both user-centered and
participatory design methods to ground the research outcomes in real life
situation, trying to extend existing social behaviors with technology. His
other projects include the design and evaluation of feedback interfaces for
sustainable behaviors, study of physical collaboration in design, the design of
technology to support teaching in high schools, and the study of ways to
capture and analyze data in the field. He recently collaborated at OSU with Pr.
Maragret Burnett on end-user programming and machine-learning feedback, and Pr.
Ron Metoyer on the study and design of eco-feedback.
