Smart Grid: The Enernet
Making our energy transmission and distribution infrastructure smarter is
viewed as a key ingredient to meeting energy demands in a sustainable manner in
the 2030 timeframe. The importance of this capability, called the Smart Grid,
is echoed by the allocation of over $4B in the stimulus package to Smart Grid
projects by the Obama administration. The continued interest of venture
capitalists in the area, and the entry of high tech heavy weights such as
Microsoft, Google, Cisco, and Intel, is also an indication of the
transformation of an industry that has traditionally moved at a glacial pace.
In this talk, I will summarize the motivation and characteristics of the Smart
Grid, the vision and evolutionary path. While the definition of Smart Grid is
usually based on ones perspective, Smart Grid architectural frameworks are
emerging along with a set of primary applications. I will describe the role of
digital technology within the context of these frameworks and applications and
the current challenges on the path to a Smart Grid vision.
