Selena Deckelmann Consultant & Database Analyst Database administration in the context of an open-source community Running databases is often considered a dark art amongst software developers and system administrators. Databases tend to require a great deal of custom configuration, exhaust available memory, disk and CPU, and when the database backing an application isn’t happy, pretty much no one is happy. Open source databases are at the heart of the success and pain of every major web application company. PostgreSQL is the most advanced relational database in the open source ecosystem of databases. It has a 15-year history, a thriving, international development team and continues to produce a major, feature-rich release every year. This talk will include an overview of issues every PostgreSQL DBA encounters, basic configuration of PostgreSQL, a survey of interesting features and discuss what it’s like working with an open source community, rather than a commercial company. Biography Selena Deckelmann is a consultant and database analyst for Emma, a stylish email marketing company. She’s a major contributor to PostgreSQL. She speaks internationally about free software, developer communities and trolling. Her interests include opening up government processes and data with the City of Portland, urban chickens and finding ways to make databases run faster.
