Abstract
In this talk, I will discuss my research on variation management systems for
end-user programmers. Variation management deals with managing program variants
over time and space. My research developed an automatic variation management
support for end-user programmers. The challenge was to integrate variation
management activities into end-user programmer's existing workflow without
changing the nature of their work or priorities. My user studies revealed that
variation management support helps end-user programmers. The studies also
helped in understanding users' behaviors and strategies while interacting with
such systems, and revealed different aspects of how modern programming
environments can be designed and developed. My research has helped end users
with programming tasks, including program exploration, program understanding,
verification, and debugging. I conclude by sharing my vision for new research
directions related to the approach and to other aspects of programmin!
g environments.

Speaker Bio
Sandeep Kaur Kuttal is a Postdoctoral Scholar at Oregon State University,
working with Dr. Margaret Burnett. In her current position, she also
collaborates with Dr. Gregg Rothermel and Dr. Anita Sarma at University of
Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). Her research interests span the areas of Software
Engineering, Empirical Evaluation and Human-Computer Interaction. She is
interested in human issues of software development, which lies in the
intersection of HCI and software engineering. Her current research focuses on
end-user programming, end-user software engineering, and information foraging
theory as applied to programming. She received her PhD degree in Computer
Science from University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2014 under the supervision of
Dr. Rothermel and Dr. Sarma. She also has a Masters of Technology and Bachelors
of Technology in Computer Science and Engineering from Punjab Technical
University, Jalandhar, India. She worked as senior lecturer in India for more
than seven years.!
Her work has been published in several highly selective Human-Computer
Interaction venues.
