Saw the flick yesterday. IMHO it was a lot better than the reviews
promised. Good light sci-fi, although not exactly a challenge for
your brain. Brian De Palma has always been a genius for making good
scenes. The movie doesn't lack suspense - especially the moments
during the space flight to Mars are very good film storytelling. The
scene where one astronaut has to choose on the orbit of Mars between
his life (and his love) and the success of the mission, is really
touching - and thrilling.
Then again, as usual, there are the typical De Palma flaws: cliches,
cliches and cliches. As if he had thought that the audience is too
stupid to understand anything than the most used Hollywood
storytelling conventions. This time, however, the funny black guy
doesn't die! (Sorry if I spoiled something...)
Every reviewer so far has said that the flick owes to such sci-fi
classics as 2001 too much. Hmmm... I didn't see the 2001 borrowings
as a bad thing.
In short, good light sci-fi. Recommended to anybody who likes the
genre. And the film has some _very_ beautiful visual moments.
You very seldom see well-made scifi movies, anyhow... So why complain?
