BUT WILL IT EVER COME UP?
The House of Representatives has approved a bill that would make it
illegal for a state to execute a pregnant woman. The law would require
states to wait for expectant mothers on death row to give birth before
putting the mothers to death.
The federal government and several states already prohibit the execution
of pregnant women. The election year vote of 417-0 in favor of the "Innocent
Child Protection Act" expands the prohibition to all the states.
The bill was provoked by a question that Tim Russert asked Vice President
Al Gore recently on "Meet the Press."
The National Right to Life Committee lobbied for the bill, but
acknowledged that there is no record of a pregnant women being executed in
the U.S.
