If you only want to listen to records, I personally wouldn't go for the
1200. I love my own pair, but for just listening the 1200 is not a)
extremely good (although it is very good) and b) certainly not very
affordable compared to most turntables (excluding those high-end goodies
like the Goldmund Reference Turntable at $ 75,000 or the ELP LT-1XA
laser turntable (no needles to wear off your precious rekkidz!) at $
20,500).
Just for listening, I personally would recommend a belt driven
turntable (direct drive causes some distortion in the sound and morover,
belt drive decks are a shitload cheaper), an audiophile cart + stylus
(as opposed to DJ carts & styli, because the latter usually don't sound
so good, are often more expensive and most importantly, are designed to
be used at higher stylus pressures, which causes more wear on the
record) and an S-shaped tonearm (linear tonearm is OK too, but S-shaped
is basically a bit better sounding and looks much kewler.. =).
Then again, if you intend to later get another deck and start mixing,
it is reasonable to get the 1200 (or some other DJ turntable - The
Vestax Decks are nice and I was surprised at the quality of the high end
of the Gemini turntables range when I tried out the deck first time last
weekend at Mind).
