STUDENTS DISMISSED FOR REFUSING TO WATCH TELEVISION
It's not unusual to hear educators suggesting that young people spend
too much time watching television. In Toledo, Ohio, one school's use of
television in class has left two junior high students in the middle of a
debate pitting school procedures against their family's religious beliefs.
The students -- brother and sister -- had been told by their parents that
watching TV is not for them. The family's religious beliefs require that TV
be off-limits because of possible sexual and violent content. Their school
uses television for in-class instruction. What to do?
Faithful to their family values they elected to walk out whenever the TV
was turned on. The school suspended the pair. The principal says he plans
to meet with the family to seek a compromise.
The children are described by the principal as "good kids who are very
bright." He says he hopes to see both sides profit from the incident.

a guess I'd have to teach my kids that it's a religion
not to watch commercials (oh yes, this has commercials)
in a teaching environment, then they could claim it
violated their religious beliefs
