>there aren't too many americans left who see communists as evil. that
>generation is dying off.
Really? I see the same happening in Finland, too... of course in a
much smaller scale, because it was only about ten years ago, when the
Evil Communist Empire still existed in our close neighbour. Ten years
ago Finnish communists were a parliamentary force which had to be
taken somewhat seriously...
... me being the last person to under-estimate the achievements of
worker's movement in Finland, but the truth is that communist
movement died much earlier than the party. The party made itself
unnecessary - at least they thought so _themselves_ back then. The
party removed "socialism" as their ultimate goal from their party
program in eighties, and "violent revolution" was trashed in sixties.
So, the Communist Party was actually only a left-wing flavor of
social-democracy in Finland after fifites...
An interesting detail in the history of Finnish worker's movement is,
that in the beginning of 20th century both social-democrats and
communists felt themselves as the proud successors of the Communist
Manifesto and Marx's theories. They fought about who were the _real_
marxists and who were the clowns. (More info in Finnish can be found
here: http://www.tietotoverit.fi/jarmo.linden/manifesti.html)
There must be something sexy in communism again... Otherwise I can't
explain why a party which had serious difficulties to attract young
people ten years ago suddenly have more youngsters on their election
list than any other party...
... or then again, maybe we're finally achieving "the maximum of
poverty" Marx talked about? ... ;)
>my uncle is in the US congress, so i've been to some democratic party
>get-togethers - the communists definitely know how to have more fun. :)
Haha... The same thing in Finland... The SDNL (The Democratic Youth
Alliance) folks used to have the best parties... They recently
changed their name to "Left Youth". The change was a lot bigger than
just a name-switch... They don't seem to drink that much alcohol
anymore as SDNL folks used to... :(
Hehe... "Left Youth"... Is it supposed to mean "leave your youth
behind and become a leftist" in English? ... ;) In Finnish the
abbreviation is even more ridicuous: "VaNu", which means "cotton"...
