Now then, the variety of music considered as "gothic" is really wide
and there's some extremely great stuff, too, like Dead Can Dance for
instance. Musically it has very little to do with the noise they call
"gothic punk" or whatever, but for some unknown reason, DCD is also
considered to be part of the gothic genre and many goths listen to it
and dig it.
And about guitar-driven music: now there are so many ways to make
guitar-oriented music. Take for example Cuban son musicians playing the
tres and other acoustic guitars. Or Brasilian bossa nova/tropicalia
guitarists. Very far from your average "German guys with curly long
hair, stockings and moustache" -type "heavy rock". And within the
category of rock, there's a wide variety of stuff. I personally dig surf
instrumentals, progressive rock (at it's best, not all of it), some
selected, more dance-oriented parts of psychedelic rock, latin rock (
la Santana & co.), some kraut-rock (although that is not always so very
guitar-based) and most of post-rock/avant-rock (the new alternative rock
sound la Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Sigur Rs, Mogwai etc.). And
think about guitar-driven wild funk - from jazz funk to indofunk. And
I'm not even going to start with the guitar in jazz music..
My point: guitar is just an instrument. It can be used in a good way or
in a bad way. I used to dismiss all guitar-based music for a long time,
but recently my eyes have opened thanks to heavy listening of Latin
American music where guitar is often essential.
