i was introduced to nethack long before i tried vi, so i was easily converted
to vi, as it felt like playing nethack! (h j k l for cursor movement,
responsive user interface, and even looks the same.)
there was some talk about doing the same with quake 1, like shooting at
letters.
well actually the dreamcast shooter conversion where you type words with the
dreamcast keyboard to "shoot" at the zombies comes pretty close, only you
should be able to really use it as an editor, saving the files etc.
