needs reg, so I've attached it.
when I was in Beijing, in November, I only saw a very
few cases of orange hair, and virtually no metal types.
hell, I couldn't find any rock n roll scene at all. the
rock bands they do have are coming from the Philippines,
in the one pub we were in we were drinking Foster's and
listening to a Philippine band play Red Hot Chili Peppers
and Deep Purple. And YES they played Smoke on the Water !!!
Altho at the Beijing Broadcasting Institute I snapped a
picture of some folks practicing with guitars and stuff.

Beijing Journal: The East Is Blue and Orange as Hip-Hop Invades
In the United States, rap and hip-hop grew out of the streets.
But in China, a campaign to create home-grown hip-hop performers
is, like so much in the Asian nation, the product of scientific
planning, government intervention, expert input, and, of course,
tests.

After the exam results were announced, the 10 winners were
whisked away to Seoul for three months of "intensive training,"
which included lessons in singing and dancing, fashion, makeup,
etiquette and public speaking. Composers wrote songs for them;
image consultants made over their dress and their hair.
They trained as if preparing for an Olympic event, with nine
hours of practice a day. Though few had ever been outside China
before, they were allowed just one day of sightseeing during
their stint at hip-hop boot camp.
"'I learned to be more polite, how to sing and dance better -
and also developed a new style," said Zheng Xin, 18, who last
year was attending performing arts school in Hebei and now,
in the studio, was wearing baggy jeans and a fuzzy pink
sweater, with bright red streaks through her yellow hair.
Three days later the 10 were making their debut on stage,
skipping and strutting through clouds of fake smoke, rapping
and singing of lost love and other teenage cares.
