Someone somewhere once suggested that generic software would have a
"best before date". Once older than n years, any software no longer
supported by the manufacturer (abandonware) would automatically turn
into freeware or better yet, open source.
Of course there's a lot of practical difficulties in this idea, but
atleast the freeware part could work up to a point. A bit like
expiring patents.
