An excerpt:

"Given its consumer focus, Apple might have been expected to dumb down the
more sophisticated Unix Internet features, or conceal them from casual
users. For the most part, though, that didn't happen. Apple has left many
powerful features intact, in some cases fronting them with easy-to-use
interfaces like the slick Network Utility, which provides easy access to
network tools such as ping and traceroute.

Actually, Apple may not have gone far enough in protecting users from
powerful Internet features. The System Preferences panel, for example, lets
users "allow remote login" on their Macs, but doesn't even hint to the user
that this can pose a security risk. And users might not know that fiddling
with Network Utility's port scanning features can get them in trouble with a
network administrator."
