Martian life easily killed with antibiotics:Italian
scientists claim to have identified -- and "re-animated"
-- extraterrestrial bacteria sealed away deep inside
ancient meteorites. These organisms, referred to as
'cryms' or crystal microbes by the researchers who
discovered them, have apparently remained dormant for
billions of years and survived � compelling evidence
that life can exist everywhere in the solar system. Giovanni
Bignami, scientific director of the Italian Space Agency,
suggests that the bacteria's existence may bolster a
theory that suggests the Earth was "seeded" with primitive
extraterrestrial life forms about 4 billion years ago.
"Life would have formed as an initial seed in the
protoplanetary nebula from which all planets originated.
This microorganism can be found ... in planetary bodies
and in the meteors fallen to Earth," Bignami told Discover
News, adding that the bacterium succumbs quite easily to
common antibiotics.
