Time to feed my shirt... Those of you who've long hoped
for a day when your clothing would clean itself without
intervention on your part take note: Scientists are at
this very moment developing clothing that will devour
dirt and human sweat. University of Massachusetts
biotechnologists have found that they can implant a
particular strain of Escherichia coli bacteria into the
hollow fibres of milkweed, a plant once used to make
clothes and now used to make rope. While the bacteria
thrive on the pre-existing food in the plant, researchers
believe they would be equally happy feeding on dirt,
odor-causing chemicals and perspiration. It's an exciting
development, and one that's been met with enthusiasm in
the fashion community. "I wear the same pair of jeans all
the time and I'm sure they have bacterial colonies living
in them, but if they were selected to convert my sweat
into sweet-smelling pheromones, that would be great," Alex
Lightman, CEO of fashion venture Charmed Technology told
 New Scientist.

Dr. Strangestink, Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And
Love Stench Warfare: The Pentagon reportedly is developing
a new genre of non-lethal weapons whose payload will
exploit the link between repellent odors and fear. With
the help of some cognitive psychologists at the Monell
Chemical Senses Center, the Pentagon is exploring the idea
of "stench warfare" as a less violent means of addressing
civil unrest. "It would give us an offensive capability
against large and unruly groups of people, if they are
unwilling to move or are openly hostile," a Pentagon
spokesman told New Scientist. "And it would minimize
the risk to our people and to the antagonists."
