I've attended The Assemblies every year since 1994, and I has lead me to
one conclusion; the scene is dead. The scene obviously reached it's
peak in 1995-1996, when computers were slow enough so one could
still impress with graphical effects. Not so anymore. I remember when we
watched in awe how the oldskool scene guru's user to whip the last bit
of power from their amigas and PC's, but it's nothing like that anymore.
Asembly has become one large LAN-party where the most popular
thing to do is play CounterStrike or Quake 3. Nevertheless, it was
fun to be there, especially when I got my computer place from the oldskool
area, where one could still see people coding and watching demos.. bit like
the old days. The term "Computer Fair" is a lot more accurate now than a
few years ago. The whole thing started it's downhill when the organizers
gave strict speaker-loudness limits and lighted the place up.
Nevetheless, I had fun and I intend to go there next year, too.
Provided I get the free ticked again, of course ;)
