An interesting point of view:

.................

Copyright law is replaced with technology

(...)

The problem with technology is that it is not the right tool for protecting
copyright. To illustrate with an example - the legality of quoting is
determined by many factors, including the size of the quote and the manner
in which it is used. A piece of software is completely unable to determine
whether the person that wants to quote a part of a work is infringing
copyright or if it is within the bounds of 'fair use' (I'm not sure about
the correct french term, in England they call it 'fair dealings'). If an
eBook reader supports quoting, it would have to use some arbitrary rule -
for example "you can only quote one page per day, and no more than ten pages
a week".

Article 6 is, in essence, removing the balance between the society and the
author codified in the copyright legislation and replacing it with arbitrary
rules governed by the software or hardware you use to access a copyrighted
work.

(...)

By enacting Article 6 in local legislation, the governments in EU are
signing away much of the power they have to control the balance in copyright
law, and giving it to the large companies that have the resources to develop
these technologies and push them into the market- place.

It is pretty obvious that at least some of the large publishers are going to
abuse this power. The DVD region lock is an example that we are all familiar
with. In the US we are starting to see digital schoolbooks that
self-destruct after a year.
