um...

a trend is a cultural phenomenon.  any particular person can 
see it with thir own eyes.  it's visible, but that tells you 
nothing about where it came from or what's�behind it.

a meme exists in the space of pure ideas.  that's why meme
is itself a meme.

just because you know a meme, it's no guarantee that it actu-
ally appears anywhere in the physical world, or even in the 
world of conversation, so that you could call it a trend.
