and of course also Canada kicked Murrcan ass, in men's AND women's. But anyways curling is a commie aport yeah ? It's pretty laid-back and if you start losing wel it's a long match so you can start drinking beer. The BBC has a few articles about curling. It seems that the UK won a gold medal, so suddenly there's curling overload on the BBC web site. It's Britain's first Winter Olympic gold medal in 18 years ! And it was an all-SCOTTISH team !! HAR !!! The mental part of it: http://news.bbc.co.uk/winterolympics2002/hi/english/curling/newsid_1837000/1837073.stm Keeping curlers cool and calm "Curling is such a mentally draining sport. I have taught the girls about concentration, pressure, how to cope if they are feeling a bit anxious. Curling wins over the skeptics (hey Japi that's you !): http://news.bbc.co.uk/winterolympics2002/hi/english/curling/newsid_1835000/1835339.stm Believe me when I say curling captivates in a different way to most other events at these Games. The mental and physical pressure on the players is immense, and you can't help but admire the way they handle it. One match takes three hours of constant concentration and frantic exertion - and that's just how I felt sitting sheet-side. From the stands, you hear the ice crackling as the curlers send down their stones, and get a real sense of the sweepers' enormous effort as they brush to order. I watched all eight faces as they discussed and conjured up the best strategy, and was left wondering how on earth they judge direction and distance so precisely. As at every other venue, the music is themed, so here, it was Apollo 440's 'Stop the Rock' and 'I love Rock and Roll' by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts that entertained us between ends. Are you sitting there drinking beer and listening to commie tunes and wondering how YOU yes YOU can win Olympic gold ? Try curling ! http://news.bbc.co.uk/winterolympics2002/hi/english/curling/newsid_1835000/1835668.stm Curling: How you could win Olympic gold But how can you put your newly-found love of curling into practice? Here's the good news - you could be an international within as little as two years. The bad news? If you don't live in Scotland, you're going to struggle. "There are very few curling facilities in England, Wales and Ireland," "You can take it up at any age or level. But in theory you could progress from beginner to representing your country within as little as two years." Not that it will be easy. "The two teams you've seen have been training every day for five months -- practising on the ice, doing weights in the gym," said Ramsay. "The sweeping is hugely physical. Try sweeping hard for 25 seconds, having a minute's recovery, doing it again and then throwing your stone. "It's very, very hard work - your arms don't stop working. At the end of a game, you're physically knackered. "And you need enormous precision when releasing the stone. Rhona had a margin of error of two inches with her winning stone -- and if you're asn inch off at release, you're two feet off at the other end." OK, so the ratio is 24 to 1, so her release was within 1/12 of an inch, that's half a centimeter. f .................................
