Subtitles kind of dealed with that in the newspapers. But they look pretty bad in the 
masses of text. In portfolios and folders you have the little "flags" in the side of 
the beginnings of sections. 
In books you can print colour to the bleeds and you get these shaded areas in the 
sides of the pages...so when the book is closed, you can see the place and the sizes 
of different chapters. It can be even formed as text.
Btw, what kind of story were you referring to? A reportage (...is that a word?...)?

Text then maybe? Very informative, doesn't take time to load, will keep people busy 
while the goodies load. It kind of negates the topic of this thread, tho!
