indeed, so called caesar-shift, otherwise known as ROT13 in the modern 
times. but..
Romans using rot13 was the first documented use of substitution cipher 
for _military purposes_. 

Kama-sutra, then again, has one of the earliest written descriptions of 
using encryption by substitution. Supposedly women should study various 
arts, and among them is mlecchita-vikalpa, the art of secret writing.

hmm i recently re-read "the code book" by simon singh, from where you 
can find more about this sort of stuff. excellent book.
