That could work, but it's probably out of the scope of this issue? But maybe that's a nice enhancement for operators that aren't sensors. I don't know. One solution is to check the timeout before the poke. That way, `poke` could fail every time, but timeout would still be respected. Seems like a relatively easy change, too.
