As I was trying out some implementation locally to use custom xcom backend, it doesn't look like it is meant to be used in core API layer. That might be the reason why it was limited to XComModel originally. Similar limitation happens for the UI support xcom tab. It shows the raw xcom value in DB. If so, I wonder it makes sense to have a general support on some api endpoints using custom xcom backend for these 2 areas. Trying to understand the architecture more.
