One POSSIBLE thought is that it might be possible that the email server is introducing lag? I generally use the SlackNotifier when testing deadlines stuff and that is nearly instantaneous, but when I tried using the SmtpNotifier I saw something like a 10-minute delay, presumably because of email server settings, spam filters, etc, but I'm not an SMTP expert by any means so I'm just speculating on the reasons there.
