   @ephraimbuddy this saved 100s of Mbs from some users. So i dont think a 
straight revert is the right long term option. Though my removing the .git dir 
we loose the ability to tell if the checkout is clean or not (the re-clone 
issue we could fix in other ways)
   
   Didn't we have some other ideas at the time? Worktrees?
