   I agree with you that the change has enough impact to go through other 
mechanisms, as you suggested. In fact, in the issue 
https://github.com/apache/airflow/issues/21867
    there was already some discussion about whether this could be moved forward 
directly via a PR or not. Given the scope and impact, I’m not entirely sure 
that simply implementing it and opening a final PR would be sufficient.
   
   In any case, my intention with this PR was to implement an initial PoC so we 
can iterate on something concrete and converge toward a well-defined final 
design. This is a major functionality gap that emerged after subdags were 
removed in favor of task groups.
