Thanks @amoghrajesh, the revert was the right call. I merged #70681 thinking the dev@ discussion had been concluded; it hadn't been. Status: - Both bugs you found are fixed in #74007, which re-applies the change. My earlier follow-up #73852 is folded into it too. - I've revived the [dev@ thread](https://lists.apache.org/thread/xtzho20rzy7fq4h7lh897xm4qxj7ltb5) with a summary and asked whether anyone still has concerns.
