+
Community

+
Since the 25.0.0 release, Kosta Tarasov, Zehua Zou and Tadeja Kadunc have
+been invited to become committers. Jeffrey Vo has been invited to join
+the Project Management Committee (PMC).

+
Thanks for your contributions and participation in the project!

+
Format Notes

+
The Tensor and SparseTensor IPC messages have been deprecated in the
+specification, and the corresponding C++ APIs for reading and writing them have
+been deprecated as well (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/51100"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">GH-51100).

+
Arrow Flight RPC Notes

+
Work on the Flight SQL ODBC driver continued. RPM packages for the driver
are now
+built (<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/47877"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">GH-47877).
+On Windows, the driver is now statically linked (GH-49538).

+
C++ Notes

+
Most of the C++ JSON handling (integration tests, extension type metadata,
+Parquet, Flight SQL ODBC...) has been migrated from RapidJSON to
+<a href="https://github.com/simdjson/simdjson"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">simdjson for parsing and to a new
+
JsonWriter
for serialization (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50566"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">GH-50566, <a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50567"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">GH-50567 and
+follow-ups).

+
The Feather reader and writer V1 APIs have been deprecated in favour of the
Arrow
+IPC APIs (<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/49231";
target="_blank" rel="noopener">GH-49231), in line with the corresponding
Python and R deprecations.

+
CSV

+
Two new parse options:
+
pad_short_rows
fills in nulls for rows with missing trailing
fields
+(<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50925"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">GH-50925), and
ignore_extra_columns
drops extra
fields from rows that have
+more columns than expected (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50967"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">GH-50967).

+
Compute

+
New
remainder
and
modulo
compute functions have
been added (<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/46901";
target="_blank" rel="noopener">GH-46901).

+
The temporal rounding functions (
floor_temporal
,

ceil_temporal
and
+
round_temporal
) now accept duration inputs (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50395"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">GH-50395).

+
Hash aggregations now support
string_view
and

binary_view
grouping keys
+(<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50223"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">GH-50223), and the
unique
,

value_counts
and
dictionary_encode
functions
+now support
float16
inputs (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50512"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">GH-50512).

+
File Systems

+
Breaking change: the S3 filesystem and its AWS SDK
dependency have been moved
+out of
libarrow
into a separate
libarrow_s3
library
(<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50194"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">GH-50194). This
+reduces the size of
libarrow
for users who do not need S3. C++
users of the S3
+filesystem now need to either link against
libarrow_s3
or load it
at runtime
+using
LoadFileSystemFactories
.

+
Parquet

+
The schema nesting depth is now limited when parsing the Thrift metadata of
a
+Parquet file, turning a stack overflow on pathologically nested schemas into a
+regular error (<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/51238";
target="_blank" rel="noopener">GH-51238). The default limit (100) can be
raised if needed.

+
Reading Parquet files with unrecognized combinations of logical and physical
+types is now tolerated instead of failing (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50910"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">GH-50910).

+
A new low-level dense decoding API allows
FIXED_LEN_BYTE_ARRAY

values to be
+decoded directly into caller-provided buffers
+(<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50333"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">GH-50333).

+
Reading only the plaintext columns of a partially encrypted Parquet file
with a
+plaintext footer no longer fails with a decryption error (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/51361"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">GH-51361).
+<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/pull/51350"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">GH-51349 disables reading KMS URLs from file key material by
default (
read_kms_url=false
). Applications relying on this
behavior should
+explicitly configure the KMS URL, or opt in with

read_kms_url=true
only if their KMS implementation validates the
supplied URL.
+Level histograms written to the Parquet size statistics could be incorrect for
+inputs spanning multiple chunks; this has been fixed (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50778"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">GH-50778).

+
APIs deprecated in version 23.0.0 and earlier have been removed (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50750"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">GH-50750).

+
Miscellaneous C++ changes

+

ArrayBuilder
subclasses for binary data now raise a

CapacityError
instead of
+silently truncating values of 2 GiB or more (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/51156"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">GH-51156).

+
Bitmap copy and inversion operations have been sped up, by up to 2x in some
+cases (<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50784"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">GH-50784).

+
The
Datum
class has a new method

ComputeLogicalNullCount
(<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50338"; target="_blank"
rel="noopener">GH-50338),
+complementing the method added to
ChunkedArray
in the previous
release.

+
Community

+
The Tensor and SparseTensor IPC messages have been deprecated in the
+specification, and the corresponding C++ APIs for reading and writing them have
+been deprecated as well (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/51100";>GH-51100).

+
Arrow Flight RPC Notes

+
Work on the Flight SQL ODBC driver continued. RPM packages for the driver
are now
+built (<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/47877";>GH-47877).
+On Windows, the driver is now statically linked (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/49538";>GH-49538).

+
C++ Notes

+
Most of the C++ JSON handling (integration tests, extension type metadata,
+Parquet, Flight SQL ODBC...) has been migrated from RapidJSON to
+<a href="https://github.com/simdjson/simdjson";>simdjson for parsing and to
a new
+
JsonWriter
for serialization (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50566";>GH-50566, <a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50567";>GH-50567 and
+follow-ups).

+
The Feather reader and writer V1 APIs have been deprecated in favour of the
Arrow
+IPC APIs (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/49231";>GH-49231), in line with
the corresponding Python and R deprecations.

+
CSV

+
Two new parse options:
+
pad_short_rows
fills in nulls for rows with missing trailing
fields
+(<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50925";>GH-50925), and

ignore_extra_columns
drops extra fields from rows that have
+more columns than expected (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50967";>GH-50967).

+
Compute

+
New
remainder
and
modulo
compute functions have
been added (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/46901";>GH-46901).

+
The temporal rounding functions (
floor_temporal
,

ceil_temporal
and
+
round_temporal
) now accept duration inputs (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50395";>GH-50395).

+
Hash aggregations now support
string_view
and

binary_view
grouping keys
+(<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50223";>GH-50223), and the

unique
,
value_counts
and

dictionary_encode
functions
+now support
float16
inputs (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50512";>GH-50512).

+
File Systems

+
Breaking change: the S3 filesystem and its AWS SDK
dependency have been moved
+out of
libarrow
into a separate
libarrow_s3
library
(<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50194";>GH-50194). This
+reduces the size of
libarrow
for users who do not need S3. C++
users of the S3
+filesystem now need to either link against
libarrow_s3
or load it
at runtime
+using
LoadFileSystemFactories
.

+
Parquet

+
The schema nesting depth is now limited when parsing the Thrift metadata of
a
+Parquet file, turning a stack overflow on pathologically nested schemas into a
+regular error (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/51238";>GH-51238). The default
limit (100) can be raised if needed.

+
Reading Parquet files with unrecognized combinations of logical and physical
+types is now tolerated instead of failing (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50910";>GH-50910).

+
A new low-level dense decoding API allows
FIXED_LEN_BYTE_ARRAY

values to be
+decoded directly into caller-provided buffers
+(<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50333";>GH-50333).

+
Reading only the plaintext columns of a partially encrypted Parquet file
with a
+plaintext footer no longer fails with a decryption error (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/51361";>GH-51361).
+<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/pull/51350";>GH-51349 disables
reading KMS URLs from file key material by default
(
read_kms_url=false
). Applications relying on this behavior should
+explicitly configure the KMS URL, or opt in with

read_kms_url=true
only if their KMS implementation validates the
supplied URL.
+Level histograms written to the Parquet size statistics could be incorrect for
+inputs spanning multiple chunks; this has been fixed (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50778";>GH-50778).

+
APIs deprecated in version 23.0.0 and earlier have been removed (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50750";>GH-50750).

+
Miscellaneous C++ changes

+

ArrayBuilder
subclasses for binary data now raise a

CapacityError
instead of
+silently truncating values of 2 GiB or more (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/51156";>GH-51156).

+
Bitmap copy and inversion operations have been sped up, by up to 2x in some
+cases (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50784";>GH-50784).

+
The
Datum
class has a new method

ComputeLogicalNullCount
(<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/50338";>GH-50338),
+complementing the method added to
ChunkedArray
in the previous
release.

date
now work in verbs (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/39688";>GH-39688),

if_else()
works with a bare
NA
branch alongside dates
(<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/38358";>GH-38358), and

-
The subcomponents are versioned independently:

-

-
C/C++/GLib/Go/Python/Ruby: 1.11.0

-
C#: 0.23.0

-
Java: 0.23.0

-
R: 0.23.0

-
Rust: 0.23.0

-

-
The release notes below are not exhaustive and only expose selected
-highlights of the release. Many other bugfixes and improvements have
-been made: we refer you to the <a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/blob/apache-arrow-adbc-23/CHANGELOG.md";>complete
changelog.

-
Release Highlights

-
A breaking change has been made to the Rust APIs (pre-1.0): returned
-
RecordBatchReader
s are now type-erased and boxed for caller
flexibility;
-this also fixes the returned reader lifetime accidentally being tied to input
-argument lifetimes (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/3904";>#3904).

-
A driver manager for Node.js is now available from NPM
-(<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/4046";>#4046,
-<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/4091";>#4091,
-<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/4116";>#4116,
-<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/4125";>#4125, etc.).

-
The C++ and Rust driver managers now support <a
href="https://arrow.apache.org/adbc/current/format/connection_profiles.html";>connection
-profiles
-(<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/3876";>#3876,
-<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/3973";>#3973,
-<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/4080";>#4080,
-<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/4083";>#4083 etc.).
(Note that
-other bindings that use the C++ driver manager, including GLib/Ruby, Go, Java,
-Python, R, and so on, inherit this support.)

-
The Go APIs have added interfaces that always take a

context.Context
for
-consistency, and to make sure context like telemetry traces propagate properly
-(<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/4009";>#4009).

-
The Python driver manager has added specific parameters for using <a
href="https://arrow.apache.org/adbc/current/format/connection_profiles.html";>connection
-profiles
-as well (<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/4078";>#4078,
-<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/4118";>#4118). Also,
non-string
-option values are directly accepted for convenience
-(<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/4088";>#4088).

adbc_get_statistics

-has been added (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/4129";>#4129).

-
The JNI bindings (allowing use of C/C++/Go/Rust/etc. drivers from Java) now
-support more functions (GetObjects, GetInfo, ExecuteSchema, etc.)
-(<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/3966";>#3966,
-<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/3972";>#3972,
-<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/4056";>#4056).

-
Packages are now being uploaded to
-<a href="https://formulae.brew.sh/formula/apache-arrow-adbc";>Homebrew
-(<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/4131";>#4131).

-
Python wheels now require
manylinux_2_28
, up from

manylinux2010
, following
-PyArrow (<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/4146";>#4146).
On macOS,
-macOS 12 is now the minimum version due to upgrading to Go 1.25+ (including on
-conda-forge, where the packages previously pinned Go 1.24 to avoid this).

-
The PostgreSQL driver tries to reconcile Arrow NA arrays with PostgreSQL
types
-when binding (<a
href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/4098";>#4098). Also,
-a bug in conversion from Arrow decimals to PostgreSQL numerics has been fixed
-(<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/3787";>#3787).

-
The SQLite driver now enables various optional features, like math functions
-(<a href="https://github.com/apache/arrow-adbc/pull/4147";>#4147).
