Looking closer, the `merge()` method is indeed there, but the file is a cython file: https://github.com/apache/buildstream/blob/86a950aba52ef6aa2cb868bf13fb24e20de37679/src/buildstream/_loader/loadelement.pyx#L205 I suspect this might be a cython bug.
