I think the right way to solve this problem is to add a new operation SAFE_DIVIDE whose semantics is that a 0 denominator produces a NULL result. Whether / is compiled into DIVIDE or SAFE_DIVIDE could be a configuration option in the type system, similar to the CHECKED arithmetic option.
