Forcing batch log replay does sound like a better solution, so I went with
this. It assumes that batch log replay cannot cause any writes to the data that
is being streamed apart from hints. Is this understanding correct?
Initial implementation can be seen

It is still work in progress, needing a tests or two before it is ready for
submission.
