In trunk (3.0), the following commit fixed the "did not get positive...." error: https://github.com/apache/cassandra/commit/06f626acd27b051222616c0c91f7dd8d556b8d45 but this one is already in branch cassandra-2.1 and there are many additional major changes related to repair in 3.0.
