FWIW - we still experience a variation on this problem even after moving to
2.1.4. We generally try to keep the JVM heap space configured to 8GB on a 16GB
VM, but some compactions will grow the heap until we run out and have to
increase it to the max on the machine (12GB is as high as we go). The
compaction will finish and if I don't set the heap space back to 8GB it will
eventually die with OOM.
This generally only happens after a full repair. The nodes can keep up with
compaction without issue during normal operation but if they get behind (like
during a repair), we run into this issue a lot.
We are moving to incremental repair which is working well, but there is
something wrong when a large compaction eats up all available RAM.
