Summary: Improve error message when removenode called on nonmember node
(was: AssertionError when removing node)
You are correct that this AssertionError was tangential and not part of
whatever underlying problem you were observing.
That said, I think letting this AssertionError through is a mistake, and I'll
improve the error message.
