Looks like we're in an impasse here: no one can see what's wrong with the
patch, or the tests, and the test infrastructure doesn't provide enough aid to
properly debug the problem. The test will not magically fix itself, so we
either remove it or pause this issue until the test infrastructure is improved
to _at least_ allow to take thread dumps of hanging nodes. Thoughts?
