This might be off topic a bit but was wondering if you had thought about using
Lucene indexes Stu?
1. You would get the lucene search api
2. You could keep a single index per CF and let lucene manage the segment file
management.
3. index.optimize() could be run along size compaction
4. while a SSTable was in the memtable form we could rely on a RamDirectory
then merge with the on disk index after SSTable flush.
The tricky part would be turing the validators into Analyzers I think...
