Thanks, I understand  - U means process is up and N is normal .  Normal here
represents  Node is part of cluster and started gossiping. (gossip status is
true)

But I believe,  it would be more appropriate  if node reports normal status
once all ports are also open, because after port open node will be actual
normal for clients.  Isn't it a literal meaning of  "normal" ?

Currently "N" in UN" status is not suitable for  end users/operators point of
view  as it only tells gossip status.  It looks misleading.

I know there are various command to check the  port status as you mentioned
like nodetool gossipinfo or nodetool info.

With this current N explanation,  I don't see any significance of nodetool
status command because much better  details (including port status, gossip
status and state)  I can get from nodetool info and nodetool gossipinfo .

I think it would be more appropriate if N in UN represents Normal  once all
ports are also open.

> Node status turns to UN although thrift and native transport port are not
> open to listen

> During startup , Node status turns to UN but not having the thrift and native
> transport ports open.  It is misleading.
> As per our understanding UN stands : node is up and running fine and ready to
> connect from  clients.
> It would be more appropriate if node shows UN status only when ports are open
> for client connection.
