FWIW, I've paused committing this because - despite everything being seemingly
ready to commit - the circleci trunk run fails with metaspace OOM. I cannot
reproduce this locally, and am unsure why this would only happen for trunk
anyway. But I don't presently have time to investigate. I hope to return to
this soon, and until then people are welcome to use the current branches as
starting points for work that utilises this functionality - I will squash and
rebase them shortly, and try to keep them up-to-date until they are committed.
