I've also pushed some follow-up cleanups. Not as much as I would like - I
think I would prefer to entirely remove on-heap {{ByteBuffer}} from
{{BufferPool}} entirely. But at least now it is explicit what type you are
requesting, by provision of enum, and you only get that type of buffer back.
Only one place in the codebase uses on-heap buffers here, and that is
{{Deflate}}. I'm sure we could get a compatible {{Deflate}} implementation and
remove this cruft.
