I don't know why (I think maybe they were amended to a merge commit) but your
updates weren't integrating with your PR, so I extracted everything to a single
commit

Since this ticket targets 4.0 and 4.1 and this patch doesn't apply cleanly to
them, we'll need at least one more PR for 4.0, and another if the same patch
doesn't apply to 4.1.
